Preliminary Exercise // Be My Wife

This was me and my group's recreation of David Bowie's Be My Wife simple music video. We decided to recreate this simple music video because it consists if just one character with an electric guitar in front of a white background throughout its entirety. To recreate David Bowie's style, we clothed our group's actor in a yellow shirt that is similar to what he wears in the original music video; this helps to ensure that our video relates to the original. I think that we produced our music video to an acceptable standard as the camera shots, angles and mise-en-scene are appropriate and similar to that of the original music video.

Preliminary Exercise // Be My Wife Prop List

These are the props and items that my group and I will be required to bring to the set in order to film our version of David Bowie's Be My Wife music video:
  • Electric Guitar
  • David Bowie-styled clothing
We will also need to book the white room at Lutterworth College as a location for us to film the video as, in the Be My Wife music video, David Bowie is positioned in front of a white background and is entirely surrounded by the colour white and no other mies-en-scene.

Preliminary Exercise // Be My Wife Storyboard

This is a storyboard that shows and explains the camera shots in the first minute and eleven seconds of David Bowie's Be My Wife music video that my group and I produced. The storyboard will help us during the filming process of our preliminary music video as we can follow and refer to it.

Preliminary Exercise // Lip-Sync

This is my group and I's video of our first attempt at lip-syncing to thirty seconds of a chosen song, Coldplay's Viva La Vida, in order to get a feel of the difficulty and accuracy required to do it. We decided to complete this task in one stable medium angle shot to retain simplicity and to ensure that the lip-syncing is the centre of attention in this video.

Preliminary Exercise // Conversation

This was me and my group's first attempt at producing a short film consisting of a character entering a room and having a conversation with another character. This film had many problems, including incorrect framing of mise-en-scene, overly-unstable camera shaking, incorrect positioning of characters and ordering of shots that required great improvement for continuity and interest purposes.

This was me and my group's second attempt at producing the short film. In this attempt, we corrected many mistakes and we improved many features and parts to ensure that it meets the required expectations.

Preliminary Exercise // Conversation Storyboard

This is the layout that I will use while producing storyboards for the different videos that I will create throughout my project. It consists of a large box to draw a simple version of the camera shot, a box to write the shot number, length and duration, and a box to write the camera angle used and a brief description of what happens in the shot. I will use one of these layout templates for each shot of the videos that I produce in order to properly plan the rise en scene and camera shots/movements prior to filming; this ensures that the time used for filming is used in the most efficient way as none of it is wasted on planning what to do.

This is a storyboard that shows and explains the camera shots in my short conversation preliminary video that I pitched to my group. Although we did not decide to use this storyboard for our video, drawing it helped me to understand how to produce storyboards that can be used for planning videos.
